I remember the time when San Francisco was everyone’s favorite city. Everyone loved the city, and were heartbroken when they left, or should I say when they left their hearts behind in San Francisco. And Tony Bennett crooned his song “I left my heart in San Francisco”.
So, what happened? In the last two decades, around 2008 or so, when the financial crisis decimated businesses, and real estate prices shot through the roof, people began leaving San Francisco in large numbers. Vacancy rates went up, and both homelessness and crime increased dramatically.

THE PROBLEM: The above graph compares crime statistics in SF over 2 years, 2023 and 2024. While crime has reduced over this time, it is still abysmally high. Especially striking is how Larceny theft is so high, followed by Motor Vehicle theft. Larceny theft is the unlawful taking of someone else’s property without the use of force. The biggest larceny theft in SF is bike theft. Nearly 17K bikes stolen in the first 6 months of 2023, and over 10K in the first 6 months of 2024. Or 55 – 95 bikes stolen daily. In Motor vehicles, over 3K stolen in the first half of 2023, and over 2,700 in the first half of 2024. Or 15 – 18 cars stolen daily. These are big numbers, any which way that you look at them.
This needs to stop! Enough is enough! It is obvious to me that all the so-called soft stops that are being used to stop theft are not working. Soft stops are things like security cameras, car alarms, video surveillance, etc., etc. This does not stop burglars, because they really don’t care if they are spotted stealing in a video camera. They will likely not be apprehended, and even if they are, they will be quickly released from jail.
